Abstract

The Federation of Basque Mountaineers arose in 1934, out of a split in the Basque Nationalist Party. Its objetive was the creation of a National Front pro-Independence. As the Civil War broke out, they maintained an hesitant attitude between not participating or fighting for independence. Eventually, they organized two battalions in the Republican band. On the other band, their relations with the Basque Government were always strained, for this had accepted to include non-Nationalist political parties
