Abstract

Genetic diversity as represented in the genetic resources of the autochthonous races has decresased because of the substitution of races, a decrease in numbers and the change of type or function. “Rare Breeds International” is working to support these autochthonous races. Currently, there is a fundamental change in the philosophy of cattle rearing and there is a tendency towards more sustainable production systems and towards the use of traditional races that are better adjusted to such a development.
