The Gipuzkoa Medical Institute is considered to have been the first professional organ in the province, since it dates back to the mid-19th century. Dr. Acha was the Gipuzkoan figure who worked most for the unity and defence of the medical class, with the "La Razón" magazine, which fought against the entry of unqualified people into the profession. The foundation of the Medical Association of Doctors of Gipuzkoa dates from 1899, and its first President was Dr. Juan José Celaya.
