Perfil histórico de la Medicina Vasca

Abstract

The work tries to reconstruct a global picture, with a temporal parting, of the basque medical past, by providing information of what is known about ancient and medieval stages, and with more details of the modern and contemporary period. With a reference to the physicans whose name are still linked to the work they performed, the means of social collaboration to fight against the disease are described (hospitals, hygienic rules, etc.). The two moments of great success of Basque Medicine are outlined: the first, corresponding to the "illustrated" decades, and the second, which started with the development of industrialization, ending in the XIX century.
