Creación y evolución de las cátedras de euskera en Vizcaya hasta 1936

Abstract

The creation of basque professorships in the Instituto Vizcaíno (Biscayan Institute) (1888-1937), in Baracaldo (1919-1926) and in the Escuela Normal de Maestras de Bilbao (Bilbao Teacher Training School) (1918-1923) is an important landmark in the continuous struggle to spread the basque language within the country, more than the obtaining of practical results, difficult to achieve in an unfavorable historical, social and political context. Using the administrative documentation corresponding to this period, we have analysed the evolution of the said professorships with respect to the professors who have held them, students registered, methods used, results achieved, influence of the political ups and downs of the Country Council, etc
