Abstract

Juan de Araoz de Uriarte defended the Basque language. He was born in Mondragón in 1525, migrated to Mexico in search of fortune and thereafter returned to Euskadi. As he had no descendants he bequeathed his wealth and specified it should be used to establish a school. This article includes one of the clauses in which Juan Araoz requests that the rector of the school should be a clergyman capable of speaking and preaching in Basque
