Abstract

The free rhythm of Basque music indicates the lack of rhythmical accent in the language. Musicians do not agree on the rhythm of the "zortziko", some say it is 10 for 8, others 5 for 8, some others 6 for 8, and yet others assert that it is 3 for 4 and binary alternatively, which is the best rhythm for the Basque language. Basque popular songs have been influenced by Gregorian melodies
