Abstract

In the conference given by Gregorio de Mújica in the festivities at Elgoibar in 1907, he says that he loves the Basque language simply because it is his language and not because of any other set of circumstances, and that he is concerned about the fact that it is not spoken in the streets. But above all, he is concerned because it is a feeling of shame that confines the language to the homes. Those who speak in Basque do not wish to be considered a peasant and fear to be classified lower in the social scale and this is just what can kill a language. In Catalonia this does not happen this and Mújica tries to encourage people not to let that happen here either
