Abstract

The author describes Sauguis' Basque sayings as discovered by Jaurgain. There are another five very old collections of Basque sayings, among which the most important is one published in 1596 whose archaic language and terms offer information to the historian, as well as to the linguist. Sauguis' manuscript is then studied and a small dictionary of the Basque terms which appear in the text is introduced. There are 205 proverbs
