Abstract

Oyanguren (F. Melchor de Santa Inés) was born in Salinas (Gipuzkoa) in 1688. In 1705 he bacame a Fanciscan monk and thereafter he was sent to themissions in ++Conchinchina. Later, he was sent as a missionary to the Philipines where he was to become the Chair of the Manila Hospice, although he was thereafter to be removed from this job. Oyanguren studied Tagalog, Chinese, Japanese, Anamític and Malay and made comparative studies of these languages. This article makes reference to various of his works
