Abstract

In 1836, A. d'Abbadie and A. Chaho published a grammar book, the title of which was Grammatical Studies on the Euskarian Language. The ideas of A. d'Abbadie who wrote an interesting and innovative introduction to the book, are analysed, taking into account the state of European linguistic studies during the first part of the 19th century. The proposed analysis includes the following points: the theory of the verb in Basque, a criticism of the traditional distinction between parts of speech, a study on linguistic relativism, the distinction between typological and etymological comparisons, a historical conception of language evolution which foreshadowed, albeit in a different manner, Schleicher's views on this matter, and the inversion of the valuation of linguistic primitivism, especially in contrast with Astarloa's conceptions.
