Urruñako 1853ko Euskal Jaiak, Ameriketako euskal emigrazioa eta eliza

Abstract

As is widely known, the poetry competition in the first Euskal Jaiak at Urrugne was for poetic compositions against the Basque emigration to the Americas. Clerygmen participated very actively in all phases of the competition, which was indeed favoured by Antoine d'Abbadie’s relations with the Basque church, which shows us how such participation is part of wider campaign developed by Basque priests against emigration. This campaign reached its highest level in the months after the Euskal Jaiak.
