Abstract

Marked by the industrial revolution and its countless consequences, especially in the area of the relation between the rural and urban worlds, between past and present, the 19th century still concerned itself about the issue of the definition of popular traditions considered as the substance of historical continuity. The mid-century setting up of Basque poetry contests by a bahari, Antoine d'Abbadie d'Arrast, within the framework of the so-called "Basque festivities" constitutes the first example of enthusiasm of Basque popular traditions which was to generate other later expressions with the invention of a new Basque style and the creation of the Musée Basque et de la Tradition Bayonnaise (Basque and Bayonre Tradition Museum).
