Abstract

This chapter deals first with the political and social context of decadence on which the new style is born and in which it initiates its creative possibilities. The new Basque architecture diminishes quantitatively, and has sober forms and a certain decline in its creative possibilities. Sculpture develops in altarpieces. The decline is even more evident in painting, a gender in which there is nothing that can compare with the great Spanish painters of the Golden century.
