Abstract

To Humboldt we owe not only the first erudite studies of the Basque language and the mores, but also precious descriptions of the landscape and the villages, the mountains and the coast. The landscape constitutes for him a constant motive of enjoyment, but nonetheless also a motive for reflection on the unity of landscape and human character.
