Abstract

The idea is to analyse the presumed opposition between the Herder/Humboldt’s concept of nation and that of Renan. The former can not be isolated, as is usually done, from each author’s philosophy of history in general. This article specifically studies Renan’s concept in the context of his various writings and in their variable terminology.
