Abstract

The ikastolas (Basque schools) represent a singular educational phenomenon in the Basque Country. Although it was set up as a single movement, the institutional development of the ikastolas has varied depending on the administration under which they were set up and the historical circumstances they have gone through. This article approaches the process of institutionalisation of the ikastolas in Navarre throughout the 20th century up to the beginning of the 21st century. An analysis is made of the initial protection of the Basque language by the Statutory Diputation, the institutional context in which the ikastolas emerge in the nineteen-sixties and their subsequent institutional development up to the promulgation of the Law on the Basque language. This article has been elaborated fundamentally with primary sources.
