Abstract

Near the Txindoki mountain, the village of Abaltzisketa (Gipuzkoa) is a good example for an analysis ofmountain society. The study is centred in shepherding. After describing the shepherds. community, geographical environment, an analysis is made of the hard life they have to lead, with special emphasis on their ordinary tasks related to this activity. To conclude, the figure of the shepherd is acclaimed, emphasising their knowledge in the elaboration of cheese, in the shearing of sheep, winter migrations and their festive customs.
