Abstract

Prestigious folklorist Jean Poueigh looks into Basque popular song with some detail (cradle songs, love songs, satirical songs, historical songs, etc.), as well as Basque popular dances (jumps, gavotas, war dances, charivatic farces, pastoral dances, etc.). In his opinion, the characteristic feature of Basque popular melodies, common to all mountain peoples, is "contemplative melancholy".
