González Mendilaharzu recapitulates the important contributions made by the Basques to Uruguay, since the Basque Bruno Mauricio de Zavala founded its capital, Montevideo, in 1724. The Basques distinguished themselves in all the sectors of activity: industry, trade, the arts, sciences, letters, etc. Because of this, from the potentates down to the humblest, the Basques are always appreciated in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. They are considered honest and laborious citizens that have contributed to the prosperity of the country that accepted them with open arms.
