José Urbano de Aguirre (1888-1957), an influential character in Argentina, was president of the Committee for Basque Immigration in that country. In 1940, the president of the Argentine Republic was Roberto María Ortiz Lizardi -of Basque origin on his father's side (he had been born in Zaya, Bizkaia) and on his mother's side (she was from Yanci, in Navarre). This president signed two decrees dated 20th January and 18th July facilitating the entrance of Basque refugees into Argentine soil, under the control and with the guarantees of the Committee presided by J.U. de Aguirre.
