Abstract

Bonifacio of Ataun assesses the intervention of Basques in the evangelisation of Argentina. His text successively mentions Monsignor Friar Martín Ignacio de Loyola (who died in 1606), Monsignor Friar Reginaldo deLizarraga (who died in 1609), Monsignor Antonio de Azkona (who died in 1700), Monsignor Friar Gabriel de Arreguiand his brother Monsignor Friar Juan de Arregui, Monsignor Julián de Cortazar and Monsignor Friar Diego de Humanzoro (who died in 1676). In more contemporary times mention is also made of Monsignor Nicolás Esandi (a descendant of a family originating from the valley of Salazar, in Navarre), Bishop of the diocese of Viedma between 1934 and 1948, who was an enthusiast of the Basque language.
