Abstract

The steps in the evolution of different materials used for cutting tools is summarized. High speed steels are analysed including the most modern refining techniques and the more advanced technologies of powder metallury including hot issostatic pressing. The advantages presented by cermets and the use of ceramic and superhard materials as cutting tools are analysed
