The Valley of Butrón in Biscay is probably one of the slowest areas as far as its medieval population development is concerned. This will have a repercussion in a later archaic economic and social organization. The end of the traditional society in the Valley of Butrón means, among other things, the usual lost of the rural property, the promotion of a certain sector of the local nobility who, monopolizing the municipal power, will reduce the importance of medieval brotherhoods as the main component of social asociation. This article tries to analyze the trajectory of some of these local nobility families. The particular cases of the Menchaca, Ansoleaga and Mendieta. All of them in a local environment. They will all take advantage of the land monopolizing to get into a clear process of social promotion. The highest nobility, however, will stay almost intact up in the top of the social structure. The Butrón family, making use of the property of the main economic centres, will make their predominance last for long
