Abstract

The studies on the Basque Romanesque from the end of the XIX century and, especially, the achievements of research since 1950 lay the foundations for approaching today the meaning and scope of the Romanesque monuments of this area. This paper offers a panoramic and a sitematic arrangement of buildings in order to place the Basque Romanesque architecture in the general flow of Spanish Romanesque. The outline includes the best examples of a monumental Romanesque, together with those of a more popular or rural trend, or with those that show the overlapping produced by the late arrival of Gothic formulas. It tries to call the attention about the interest of the Basque Romanesque architecture as a model of the complex development of architecture in expansionist periods
